Flow in Fluid-Filled Elastic Tube

Advisor: Arkadi Berezovski, Ph.D., Senior Researcher at Institute of Cybernetics

Background

Motivated by the importance of flow dynamic factors in the development and progression of arterial diseases, the influence of the vessel wall distensibility on the local flow field in pulsatile blood flow in arteries is investigated. Of interest are the wall displacement in the bifurcation region, the dynamics of flow separation and recirculation and the wall shear stress distribution. The deformation of the arterial wall during the pulse cycle is described using geometrical non-linear shell theory. The complex mechanical properties of the vessel wall are approximated by an incrementally elastic relation. The mathematical description of the blood flow uses the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.
