Statement of the problem
To predict the wave parameters (most importantly, the wave heights) from a single photographic snapshot of a wave pattern.
Main advantage
no physical contact is required with the wave surface
to avoid artificial perturbations,
extreme weather conditions on sea.
Assumptions
wave field is made up of waves travelling in different directions;
waves are soliton-like.
