Hardware

The computer network of the software department forms a separate segment within the network of the Institute of Cybernetics (IOC). This segment consists of one Sun SPARCstation 20 with four 100 MHz RT625 processors, 128 Mb main of memory and about 5 Gb of disk space, which works as server for this network, one Sun Ultra 1 Model 140, one Sun SPARCstation 10, four Sun SPARCstation 5, one Sun SPARCstation 4, one Sun SPARCstation Classic, one Sun SPARCstation X, two Sun SPARCstation 1, one Sun 3 station, and seven IBM PC type computers (see figure). All the above-mentioned computers are interconnected via ethernet cable and via the network of the Institute of Cybernetics to the worldwide Internet. The server is also available via modem. Two protocols run parallel in the network segment of the software department: the Sun computers communicate using TCP/IP and IBM PCs using IPX and TCP/IP protocols.

Ten Sun SPARCstations have been placed in the computer classroom of Tallinn Technical University (TTU) located in room B437 of IOC since some of them have been obtained under Tempus project JEP-06145 strictly for education purposes and altogether can serve as a lab for computer science. For printing from the Sun computers a dot matrix printer CI600Q, a Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4MP, and an Apple Laserwriter are available. From other rooms of the software department the Sun computers can be reached via four VT200terminals. The Sun 3 computer is connected to the Sun network server as anX terminal. The Sun network server has a 5 Gbyte 4 mm tape drive and CD-ROM connected to it. To transfer files to a nonnetworked personal computer or to store individual user files, two Sun computers have a floppy disk drive.

The IBM PC type computers are located in different rooms of the software department and they form logically a separate network controlled from a server by the Novell's advanced network operating system Netware 4.1. For printing a Hewlett Packard LaserJet II P connected to the Novell server is available. In addition most of the IBM PC type computers have a dot matrix printer used only by the host. From each IBM PC type computer it is possible to open an alphanumeric terminal window to work on any Sun station reachable.

The Sun SPARCstations and Novell server get power via UPS and the power management software for UNIX LanSafe III is used.
